Tips – Traveling with Babies
Posted by Lizz on April 7th, 2008
After the birth of your new baby you might not be traveling as frequently as you did previously, but having a youngling doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy vacationing. It just means that you must be ever more vigilant when traveling with your child. You also have to plan in advance and anticipate situations that might occur so that you and your entire family experience an enjoyable vacation rather than a regretful nightmare. If you know friends and family members who have taken their children on holidays, it’s recommended you get advice from them as well.
The most arduous part of your vacation, with your child, is the journey. It is not simple and can be a very stressful occasion. Plan well in advance so that you can make the journey as relaxing as possible for yourself and your child. Always remember that even when traveling by air, train, road, or sea your child will require a passport.
When traveling, it’s a good idea to get seats together because that will provide you with the ample space you need with your child. Also, book meals for your child well in advance and try to schedule it so that your children eat before you. This makes your meal time much more enjoyable. Take some old and new toys with you so that your child will be occupied and will not tire from the journey.
Remember to always plan well in advance. There might be several delays during the journey so be sure to pack enough snacks and, especially, drinks for the children. It’s advisable to not bring sticky snacks because they tend to be messy. Purchase a baby sling or back carrier, if you don’t have one already, because it occupies less space and is an easier means of transporting the baby around.
When planning a holiday, find out what kind of child care facilities are provided. Things like cots, prams, and highchairs are noteworthy services that should be taken into consideration when choosing your destination so that you do not have to burden yourself by carry these items with you. Certain hotels also provide childcare services such as nannies and crèches but you should be satisfied with their level of performance before choosing to use them.
If you are vacationing in the Caribbean or another location where the weather is hot, then you should carry ample amounts of sun block for your baby. Baby skin is extremely delicate and is highly prone to receiving sunburns.
Once you have chosen your destination, now it’s time to think about your baby’s vaccination procedure. If your baby does require certain mandatory vaccinations then it’s a good idea to take a bit before your vacation date. Certain multiple vaccinations cannot be taken together and may require a few weeks in-between each inoculation. So remember that you may need some time to vaccinate your child.
The golden rule to experience an enjoyable vacation with your child is to plan ahead. It’s recommended that you make a separate check list for your child and yourself.
